Raiders Halt Losing Streak

Raiders rewarded for effort in Brandon

For the third game in a row, the Prince Albert Raiders outshot their opponent and carried a one-goal lead into the third period. Unlike in the previous efforts, however, the Raiders not only held on but expanded their lead and took a hard-earned victory.

Keaton Sorenson scored twice and Carter Serhyenko stopped 24 shots as the Raiders downed the Brandon Wheat Kings 3-1 on the road. Landon Kosior also scored, while Wheat Kings goaltender Ethan Kruger stopped 25 of the 28 shots he faced.

On a goal nearly identical to his season-opening tally, Sorenson started the scoring when he took a pass from Evan Herman to bust into the clear at the top of the left circle, drove the net and opened up the five-hole on Kruger. He slipped it through on the backhand to make it a 1-0 game.

Sorenson struck again later on in the period, though not before he nearly set up someone else on several occasions, the most dramatic of which was a pass across the offensive zone to Tayem Gislason, only to see Kruger make a sprawling stop. But Sorenson kept after it, continuing the cycle and forcing it back to the point before drifting into the slot. Ozzy Wiesblatt set him up perfectly for a shot from just beyond the circles, and with Herman setting a screen he found the twine again.

That second goal would prove to be the winner, as late in the second period Brett Hyland scored his second of the weekend. Hyland faked a shot from the right wall, danced into the slot, and beat Serhyenko low-blocker.

The third period started out nastily, as Terrell Goldsmith leveled Ben Thornton right in front of the Raider bench. Goldsmith then answered the bell in a fight with Logan Hammett, whom he soundly thumped.

Buoyed by the fight, the Raiders restored their two-goal lead just after a power play expired when Kosior stuffed home a puck from the bottom of the left circle. After a lengthy review, the officials determined the goal was good, and the Raiders were up 3-1.

Though the Wheat Kings drew several penalties after that, the Raiders mostly held them to the outside on three consecutive kills. When there was a hole to be found in the penalty kill, there was none to be found in Serhyenko, who provided several point-blank stops and secured the win.

The Raiders take three of a possible four points on the weekend and now have their third win of the campaign. They’ll rest up this week before facing the Saskatoon Blades at home on Friday night for the first meeting this season.
