Annual poppy campaign kicks off in P.A.

Oct 29, 2021 | 1:59 PM

The annual poppy campaign is back.

Starting October 29 and going until Remembrance Day on November 11, people in Prince Albert can receive a poppy at various locations across the community.

As per tradition, the city’s Mayor Greg Dionne received the first poppy.

He said it’s always an honour to help kick off the local campaign.

“I certainly respect the vets, I know what they’ve done for us, they made our country great, and they did make our country free,” Dionne explained.

Colin Riese, Poppy and Wreath Committee Chair with P.A.’s Legion, noted everything raised in town will support local veterans and their families.

“If our building needs power or heat that comes out of the branch funding, it doesn’t come out of our poppy campaign,” Riese said.

When a veteran or their family needs financial help, they’re encouraged to reach out to the local service officer or the provincial service officer.

The Legion will only receive a file number and no information about the individual or family. After the request is approved by the Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command in Regina, the funds will be handed over.

Riese added they haven’t had to turn away a veteran over a lack of funding.

In some cases, the Saskatchewan Command will ask them to help them as they need to support more individuals.

“They will, more times than not, come to our branch and say here’s a file number, do you have funding,” Riese said.

Various locations across P.A. will have poppy boxes where individuals can donate any amount of money and receive a poppy in exchange.

Six of these locations, the Northern Lights Casino, Princess Auto, Lake Country Co-op, Canadian Tire, Save-On-Foods, and Peavey Mart, will have unique boxes where individuals can donate using their debit or credit cards.
