Prince Albert dancers take part in provincial flash mob

Saskatchewan residents have for months been encouraged to stick it to COVID, but on Wednesday, over 100 dance studios from across the province helped shake it instead.

The idea for the virtual flash mob, #SKdancestogether, was born out of discussions with dance educators as an opportunity to celebrate dance and connect across the province.

Jenna Trawin, co-owner and artistic arts director at Performing Arts Warehouse, explained the video challenge was a great opportunity for their students, who have not been able to perform in front of a live crowd for 19 months.

“Everybody is just itching to get back performing and hopefully performing with an audience sometime soon,” she said.

Trawin explained all the dancers have been forced to be very adaptive during the pandemic, wearing masks and dancing at least six feet apart.

“It’s really changed how we dance,” she said.

As part of the provincial challenge, all the clubs used the same piece of choreography and wore provincial colors (green & yellow) to show their love of dance and love of Saskatchewan. Gillian Horn, an instructor at Ballet and All That Jazz, explained dance studios represent a second home to the children, and so a special relationship has been affected during the pandemic.

“In school you’d have your teacher for one year but in a dance studio situation you have your same teacher for up to 10 years,” she said.

Reflecting back on the number of pre-video practices and performing the end result on the Rotary Trail, Horn said the students had a lot of fun, and she also noticed parents watching from the sidelines seemed to enjoy being there and having a great time as well.

“So many parents came up to us afterward and said thank you for dong this. This was fun and we haven’t looked forward to something like this in a long time,” she said.
