Increasing popularity of Rotary Trail prompts ‘etiquette rules’ from the City

Since the Rotary Trail was completed in 2019, the City of Prince Albert said its become increasingly popular to a variety of activities including walking, cycling, roller skating, skateboarding and more. But not everyone knows the rules when using the 10-foot wide paved pathway.

“As the popularity of the trail increased, we started getting more and more questions about what the etiquette rules are,” said Mayor Greg Dionne. “This list will help make it clear what the basic expectations are when you are on the trail.”

The 10 etiquette rules when using the trail are:

  1. Always yield to pedestrians
  2. Keep right and pass on the left
  3. Keep your speed under control
  4. Ring your bell when you are passing
  5. Wear a helmet
  6. Make sure your brakes are working
  7. Make sure you are visible, have reflectors on the front and back of your bike
  8. When you walk on the path, keep to the right.
  9. Do not block or crowd the path
  10. Please keep your puppy leashed

“We want all our residents to enjoy the Rotary Trail to its full extent every season of the year,” said Dionne. “As we head into our winter season, I encourage everyone to take a moment to learn the rules.”

There are also a number of rules outlined in the City’s Bicycle Bylaw. For example, helmets are required for anyone operating an electric bicycle or power assisted bicycle. Helmets are recommended for all other bicycles. Cyclists must also yield to pedestrians and travel at a reasonable rate of speed given the conditions of the area you are riding in.

The Rotary Trail is available 12 months of the year and is cleared of snow during the winter.
