No mints this year as Girl Guide cookie campaign gets underway

It’s that time of year when Girl Guides will be out to sell their popular cookies, but something will be missing this time around.

Aside from extra measures in place due to COVID-19, the mint cookies are not available this year. Thankfully, the vanilla and chocolate sandwich cookies are still around and will be a part of the fall cookie campaign.

So why the change? According to Diamond Isinger with the Girl Guides of Canada, impacts due to COVID-19 have resulted in the mint cookies being unavailable. Insinger said they plan to have the mint cookies back in time for next fall’s campaign.

Despite this change and growing concerns with COVID-19, sales of Girl Guide cookies have been going well so far this fall.

“All units (Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders and Trex) haven’t used special events for the sale of their cookies,” said Melanie Honish with the Evergreen District of the Girl Guides which represents Prince Albert and surrounding areas.

“They are using methods which keep both the girls and the public safe during this pandemic. The sales of the cookies have been going very well for all units.”

Insinger added after receiving generous support from retailers last year while girls were unable to sell in public, cookie sales are back to a “new normal,” with girl-led cookie sales to their friends, families, neighbours, and communities.

“Girls are selling through a variety of methods including door-to-door and at public locations,” said Insinger. “Online sales, developed for the first time as an adapted selling alternative during COVID, will continue alongside traditional in-person selling in our ‘new normal.”

The Girl Guides of Canada relies on cookie sales as a primary source of fundraising with all funds raised supporting the different programs.

The cookies are manufactured by Ontario-based Dare Foods.
