Raiders outgunned in special teams battle in Medicine Hat
The Prince Albert Raiders surrendered three power play goals and were 0-3 on the man-advantage themselves in a 6-2 defeat to the Medicine Hat Tigers Friday night at Co-op Place in Medicine Hat. The Tigers win evens the season series, after the Raiders beat the Tigers 3-2 in a shootout last Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre.
The Raiders did have a 2-1 advantage 5:30 into the second period as Hayden Pakkala scored his first WHL career goal, while Dallyn Peekeekoot scored his first of the season in the first period. But the Tigers got on a role as they got a pair of power play goals from Oasiz Wiesblatt, the younger brother of Raiders’ assistant captain Ozzy Wiesblatt, and Teague Patton.
“We took some penalties and they were able to get some momentum off the goals,” Raiders assistant coach Jeff Truitt said. “I thought the first half of the game really wasn’t that bad, we were on pucks, we seemed to have some speed and were moving some pucks, but in the second period, it was one thing after another— lost battles, penalty kill.”
Steven Arp scored the insurance marker for the Tigers late in the second on a rebound. Corson Hopwo scored the Tigers’ third power play goal halfway through the third, before Noah Danielson scored late to make it a 6-2 score. Oren Shtrom had the first goal for the Tigers, before adding two power play assists.
