Marquis Road West extension completed after multi-year process

The Marquis Road West extension has officially been completed and is now open to the public to use.

On Thursday afternoon members of Prince Albert City Council and Mayor Greg Dionne were on hand for the ribbon cutting.

The roadway wraps around the West Hill area from Seventh Avenue to 10th Avenue West and from 10th Avenue West to 28th Street by the Victoria Hospital.

Mayor Greg Dionne told the media Thursday the road is meant to help alleviate traffic from residential areas and connect the east to the west as well as making traffic flow easier to the hospital and the Alfred Jenkins Field House.

“You’ll come down Marquis Road now and instead of having to turn on Fourth or Sixth it’ll relieve traffic out of those two intersections and then you’ll come all the way down here and then up on 10th,” he said.

This will make room for further economic developments including Lake Estates, a housing project which Dionne said will be the first one the public will see.

Dionne said it was a need for the community because the city continues to grow and expand and when that happens it’s important to be able to move traffic.

“This will help move traffic and soon Marquis Road will be similar to the Rotary Trail; it will almost be all the way around the city,” he added.

Capitol Projects manager Nykol Miller said the design for the project began in 2019 and the underground infrastructure, which includes new water, sewer and storm was put in last year. After that the roadway construction and pavement was completed in 2021. There’s some remaining components to it, including a trail system and landscaping. The final top lift of paving will be completed next year. The roadway was prioritized in a 2017 study as the traffic volume was set to increase in the next five to 10 years.

The total project value, which is an estimation since they haven’t got the total yet numbers in to be $5 million with all the work to date.

Councillor Ted Zurakowski said the project is exciting not only for the two areas of the city but for all of Prince Albert.

“A lot of the easterly traffic, instead of going through neighbourhoods in West Hill they’ll be coming right around, and we won’t see that volume of traffic or those speeds going through residential neighbourhoods,” he said.

There were new stop signs installed at the intersection of Sixth Avenue West and Marquis Road as well as 10th Avenue West and 28th Street West by the Alfred Jenkins Field House.
