A local non-profit recently got a huge show of support in the form of a donation from Safeway.

As part of a recent campaign, employees at Safeway in South Hill Place raised $14,882 for the Prince Albert Food Bank.

Executive director Kim Scruby said he’s extremely grateful for the support and knows right away where that money will go.

“We use it for produce. We rely on a lot of non-perishables that get donated throughout the community. This (donation) is nice because it gives us the option that anything we are short of, we can go get.”

This is not the first time the locally owned grocery store has donated to the food bank as Scruby said there are a couple of annual campaigns that directly support his organization.

The money also comes at a key moment for the food bank as winter approaches, and demand is starting to pick up again.

“We’re keeping up currently,” Scruby said. “I guess we’ll wait and see. COVID has been a kind of a game-changer for us and most other organizations too.”

Despite concerns with COVID and some public health measures reinstated last month, Scruby said the food bank has continued to receive the support it needs from the community and hopes that will continue in the coming months.
