Man dies in police custody after going into medical distress at Victoria Hospital

A 29-year-old man has died while in police custody after he went into medical distress while police investigated a disturbance at the Victoria Hospital.

According to a media release, on Oct. 5 at shortly after 3:00 a.m. he went into medical distress while in Victoria Hospital and due to the seriousness of the distress, he was taken to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon for further care.

On Oct. 12 he was pronounced dead in hospital making it the second in-custody death in just two days.

The Criminal Investigations Division and Forensic Identification Section of the Prince Albert Police Service are investigating.

An independent observer has been assigned by the province to oversee the investigation as it’s being handled as an in-custody death.
