Repairs to three bridges at Little Red River Park to start soon

Oct 12, 2021 | 6:47 PM

The City of Prince Albert said construction will soon start on the replacement of three pedestrian bridges in Little Red River Park.

Oct. 18 has been set for the day for construction to begin on The Sliding Hill Bridge, The Lions Gate Bridge, and The Sports Council Bridge.

The Sliding Hill and Lions Gate bridge were both damaged after the Spruce River flooded in 2013, while the city said The Sports Council Bridge was roughly built and sways side to side. The embankments at both ends are also eroding and the retaining wall on the north side is decaying.

“All three bridges will be replaced with prefabricated steel structures meeting current building codes and accessibility standards,” said Capital Projects manager for the City of Prince Albert, Nykol Miller.

“Due to the replacement of the three bridges occurring over the Spruce River, the work is occurring during frozen ground conditions to limit erosion.”

As a result of the construction, some of the cross-country ski trails and bike trails will be re-routed as the Sports Council bridge won’t be accessible starting Oct. 22.

The city will be keeping the existing Lions Gate Bridge in place while construction of the new bridge takes place. However, some periodic closures of the existing bridge could still happen but for most of the project, it will remain accessible.

The access road from Pine Grove Centre will be used for bridge construction equipment in November and December and as a result, the implementation of snow trails on this section may be postponed.

Construction on the bridges is expected to wrap up by the spring of 2022.
