SHA, pharmacies set to start administering flu shots

As the Saskatchewan government implores residents to get COVID-19 vaccinations, it’s also now making another vaccine available.

Starting Tuesday, people in the province can book appointments to get this year’s flu vaccine. Clinics operated by the Saskatchewan Health Authority are to begin Oct. 12.

“The Government of Saskatchewan strongly encourages residents to get their flu shot this year,” Health Minister Paul Merriman said in a media release.

“Protecting yourself and your loved ones from contracting influenza is a simple thing we can all do to further ease the pressure on our health-care system caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Everyone six months of age and older can get the flu vaccine.

Residents can book appointments for flu shots online here or by telephone at 1-833-SASKVAX (1-833-787-5829).

The SHA’s flu shot clinics also will be offering COVID vaccinations, so people can get both their flu and COVID vaccinations at the same time and at the same location.

Appointments for COVID vaccinations can be made using the same online and telephone options listed above for the flu shots. A person who wants both shots needs to make only one appointment.

“All Health Canada-approved COVID-19 vaccines can be given at the same time as other vaccines,” the SHA’s Dr. Tania Diener said in the release. “No additional safety risks or adverse events following immunization have been identified by simultaneous administration of these vaccines.”

Many pharmacies in the province also are an option for those interested in getting a flu shot. A list of pharmacies offering the flu vaccine can be found on the Pharmacy Association of Saskatchewan website.
