Frustration grows in P.A. over illegal use of fireworks

Frustration is at a boiling point for many Prince Albert residents over fireworks.

For many, it’s become a daily occurrence where they wake up early in the morning to what sounds like gunshots.

City Councillor Blake Edwards says he’s personally had enough, and he knows others feel the same way.

“There seems to be a celebration of fireworks every evening and I don’t know why,” Edwards told paNOW. “It’s scaring residents, they sound like gunshots and disturbing the sleep of our residents.”

These concerns have forced the city to update the ‘Fire and Emergency Services’ bylaw which includes the rules on fireworks.

As it currently reads, it goes over how to obtain a permit and where fireworks can’t be used such as streets and schools, unless given permission.

It also notes those who don’t follow the rules can be fined with the fee being as much as $2,000.

However, some believe it doesn’t do enough to deter individuals from setting them off.

“Fireworks continually every night causes disturbance to the peaceful living environment,” said Dave Mulhall, spokesperson for Prince Albert midtown neighbourhood watch group.

“These people need to be held accountable.”

There’s currently no timeline on when the bylaw will be changed.

According to P.A.’s Fire Chief Kris Olsen, it’s being reviewed before a draft is sent to city council for approval.

“It is a priority… it has to hit different offices in the process of approval and we’re well underway,” Olsen said.

He didn’t specify what changes are being recommended.

Meanwhile, Edwards notes they don’t plan on banning fireworks.

In his opinion, the changes are needed to ensure they change from being a nuisance to a fun occasion for family and friends.

“We’re not talking New Year’s Eve, we’re not talking July 1, we’re talking any regular evening,” Edwards said.
