Peace Region harvest more than half done

GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. – The Sept. 21 crop report from the province says 56.9 per cent of the Peace Region crop had been combined as of that date.

That compares to 44.3 per cent in the September 14 report.

The five-year average for September 21 is 19.1 per cent and harvest completion was at 25.5 per cent a year ago.

Across Alberta, just under 79 per cent of the crop is in.

The completion breakdown by crop in the Peace Region area is 92.5 per cent for peas, 74 for spring wheat, 61 for barley, 52.8 for oats, and 35.2 for canola.

The report also says yields in the Peace are estimated at 33.3 bushels per acre for spring wheat, 37.3 for barley, 49.9 for oats, 25.5 for canola, and 29.4 bushels per acre for peas.

The report also says 95 per cent of the spring wheat in the Peace at Number 1 CW or Number 2 CW. For peas, none are considered 1 CAN but 87 per cent or 2 CAN.

Canola is at 100 per cent 1 CAN, eight per cent of the barley is malt grade while 88 per cent is 1 CW, and 53 per cent of the oats is 1 CW or 2 CW.

Pasture is rated 59 per cent poor, 32 per cent fair, eight per cent good, one per cent excellent.
