Prince Albert celebrates community diversity by showcasing ‘Culture Days’

Sep 24, 2021 | 8:00 AM

Culture Days in the City of Prince Albert kicks off today and will run for the next month until Oct. 24.

Over the next month, there will be approximately 30 free events and programs that will be offered.

The theme for this year is to ‘Imagine The Possibilities.’

“I think the pandemic helped us recognize how important arts and culture are in our lives,” Judy Macleod-Campbell, the city’s arts, and cultural coordinator told paNOW. “The idea of the theme is about the possibilities for arts and culture opportunities, and really getting involved and learning about the benefits they provide people.”

A few key highlights of events are:

  • Sept. 25 and 26 – Tapestrama, hosted at Carlton Comprehensive High School this year. Tapestrama is a perfect example of diversity, culture, and talent in our city and includes some amazing food booths.

“It has all different types of cultural groups and entertainment whether it is singing or dancing, showing their culture, and experiencing other cultures,” Macleod-Campbell said.

  • Sept. 25 – Urban Art Tour at Gateway Mall. Watch local artists at work.
  • Sept. 25 – Community Mural Project at the Historical Museum.
  • Sept. 29 – Zoom demonstration with Marvel Comic Artist Kyle Charles.
  • Oct. 2 – Flamenco Dancing at the Arts Centre. A new event this year.
  • Oct. 4 – A National Sixties Scoop exhibit and film at the John M. Cuelenaere public library.
  • Oct. 9 – Behind the Scenes Vault Tour at the Mann Art Gallery.

“There are some films and exhibits from the National Film Board that are at the library, that is new and will be a great thing to partake in,” Macleod-Campbell said. “There is a number of different programs and events.”

A complete schedule of all events is available on their website.

There will be free public transit to Culture Days events on Saturday, Sept. 25.

Current health restrictions will be enforced while attending Culture Days events. Non-medical face masks will be mandatory while indoors, and social distancing will be encouraged at events.

Culture Days is a national celebration of arts and culture. It has become the largest cultural event in Canada. An estimated two million people attend the thousands of free activities and performances annually, hosted by artists, cultural organizations, and municipalities in 355 communities across the country.
