Prince Albert Special Olympics preparing for winter programs

Sep 22, 2021 | 2:00 PM

Registration for winter events for Prince Albert Special Olympics takes place tomorrow night.

Registration will be at the Minto Bowl Recreation Centre from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“Our winter programs are bowling and floor hockey,” Mike Svenson, organization chair told paNOW. “Usually we have around 70 to 80 athletes participating every year.”

There is a $20 fee for registration, and then an additional $10 fee for each sport signed up for. Signing up for one of the two sports would be $30, while signing up for both would be $40.

Bowling is scheduled on Thursday nights from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Minto Bowl location, from September 25, 2021, to April 13, 2022.

Floor hockey will run on Wednesday nights from 6:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Riverside Community School, from October 13, 2021, to March 30, 2022.

He added they will be enforcing provincial health restrictions above and beyond what is being required, and will be extra cautious regarding health and safety.

“Mask wearing and a proof of vaccination will be mandatory for all athletes and volunteers as well,” Svenson said. “You never know if someone has an underlying health condition, so we want to provide the upmost safety and protection for everyone involved in our program.”

He said they will have 15 volunteers for this season, but they are always looking for more.

“Volunteers are always welcome to apply,” Svenson said. “We definitely want to make sure we get the right volunteers in place, they are very important to any program, and are very important here as well.”

Due to the pandemic, they have seen the number of participants go down over the past year, but will be hoping to see pre-pandemic numbers once again.

“Special Olympics is designed to give athletes an opportunity to participate in sporting programs,” Svenson added. “The primary focus is to enrich the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities through the involvement in sports and other leadership programs we provide.”

They will have a desk set-up tomorrow night for registration. Volunteers will be available to answer any questions and help with the process. Social distancing will be enforced, and non-medical face masks will be mandatory.
