41st annual Terry Fox Run goes virtual this weekend

The 41st annual Terry Fox Run will be returning to Prince Albert once again to raise money for cancer research.

However, the event on Sunday, Sept. 19 will be different this year as Canadians will participate in the virtual Terry Fox Run.

“Terry had to stop his Marathon of Hope 41 years ago when his cancer returned,” says Fred Fox, Terry’s older brother in a media release. “He asked Canadians to keep on fundraising for cancer research without him so that his dream of finding a cure would one day be realized — and that is exactly what we need to do now.”

Fundraisers and those planning to donate will have a newly designed website, a new Terry Fox Run mobile fundraising app available for download on the apple store, personalized QR codes for fundraisers across Canada, and the ability to text ‘Terry” to 45678 to make small donations.

“Cancer hasn’t taken a break and continues to deeply affect millions of people,” says Jim Woodgett, President and Scientific Director of The Terry Fox Research Institute. “Perhaps not since 1980 have we seen such a dire need for cancer research to ensure we can combat the negative effects of disrupted screenings, surgeries, and interventions for years to come.”

All the proceeds of the annual event will fund cancer research and a new project called the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network. The project is a collaboration between some of Canada’s best cancer researchers who will be sharing knowledge and building a new cancer data platform to deliver the best possible outcome for each patient.

Any Prince Albert residents who have pledges to hand in can do so on Sunday at the Alfred Jenkins Field House at the front entrance at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those interested can also purchase a T-shirt for $20.
