Prince Albert Police Service win annual Terry Fox Relay Race

Many first responders from Prince Albert came out to the Harry Jerome Track at Prime Minister’s Park on Sunday afternoon for the annual Terry Fox Relay Race.

Members from the Prince Albert Police Service, Prince Albert Fire Department, Parkland Ambulance, and Prince Albert and area RCMP all took part in the race, and donated to the cause as well.

Each team donated $500 to the Terry Fox Fund for cancer research, totaling $2,000.

Once again, the Prince Albert Police Service took out the competition early, and finished strong, taking home the checkered flag.

“It’s not about who wins or loses at something like this, it’s about everyone coming out,” Logan Cherewyk from the police service said. “The donations are awesome, it’s all for a good cause and I don’t think anybody minds coming out and supporting something like this.”

Cherewyk ran with Ron Myers, Brett Friesen, and Tanner Schultz. Their coach was Josh Peterson.

Jordan Ambrose, from Parkland Ambulance also talked about the importance of the services supporting the event together.

“It’s a lot of fun, it’s for a great cause,” Ambrose said. “The goal is to bring awareness to the Terry Fox Run, next weekend.

“We won it for a few years, and these last couple of years the police have got us, so they have got bragging rights for the next year.”

Next week’s Terry Fox run will be virtual once again. On Sunday, Sept. 19 there will be committee members at the Alfred Jenkins Field House to take in person donations from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“The entry fee goes towards cancer research,” said Vern Hodgins with the Terry Fox Run For Cancer research committee. “We really appreciate the job these people do every day, putting their life on the line for us. The fact that they came out here today and raised money for cancer research speaks a lot about these woman and men.

“It was a great day and a great race.”

Donations towards the Terry Fox fund can be made online, and participants in the virtual run next weekend can find the link for it on their website.
