Annual Tub-a-Thon helps Mont St. Joseph get one step closer to fundraising goal

The Mont St. Joseph Home held their 22nd annual Tub- a-Thon raising close to $8,000 to go towards specialty bathtubs for their residents.

Wayne Nogier, Chief Executive Officer at Mont St. Joseph Home told paNOW they currently have six bathtubs which need to be replaced in the building that are over 20 years old.

“The tubs have served their purpose,” Nogier said. “They’re functioning with duct tape and band aids and that’s not far from reality in some cases.”

The Tub-a-Thon campaign was an initiative that was started five years ago when they began the discussion to start replacing them. He explained their home of 120 residents has multiple levels of users so they’re not looking for just one type of tub to replace all six. They have the need for a number of different types of bathtubs such as ones for residents who are more independent with minimal supervision, and tubs that require full care where they have to lift them into it. They are also looking to transform one of the tubs into a shower space for specialized care for the younger demographic in the home.

“The entire project is about $250,000 to replace the six tubs based on what we’re planning,” he said. “Over the longterm period we’re about halfway through collecting money for that project.”

He explained the event went well today and he anticipates their phones will continue to ring over the next few days with donations as it remains in the back of peoples minds.

“I thought today was a success… Moving to a virtualized environment because of the COVID situation in the province right now means that we don’t get the face to face interaction with people any longer like we used to do an event say two years ago,” he said.

“And recognizing there’s a lot of stress and anxiety for people out there in the community. We recognize that disposable income for people has decreased over the last 18 months as well so the asks become so much more difficult.”

He added on Thursday the people who showed their generosity dropped off their cheques at the home or called in to make a donation.

If people are interested they can donate in one of two ways. They can visit Mont St. Joseph’s website or call the home directly at 306-953-4500.

“We’re elated that people still think about us and think that this is an important cause. I just can’t say enough about our donors. They’ve again continued to exceed our expectations,” Nogier said.
