MELFORT, Sask. – Farmers who hire foreign farm workers need to be aware of how cultural differences can influence communications.

Tina Varughese is a professional speaker and trainer with tWorks.

These workers come from across the globe and their values will differ. She said employers need to recognize communication styles will differ in each country.

“If it’s Ukraine, they trend to be very direct in their communication style, Philippines tend to be very indirect in their communication style,” Varughese said. “Even if you’re offering feedback to one of your workers and how that feedback should be offered so as not to shame or blame or embarrass but to help engage an employee, teach an employee, increase that employee engagement.”

Varughese said employers want foreign workers to become part of the community then they will be more willing to stay which in turn assists in the growth of those farms.

The Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) will discuss the new feed assistance program at the organization’s virtual meeting at the end of the month.

ABP semi-annual meeting will include a drought update, strategic objectives, and review of the financial reports from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sept. 30.

The producer town hall meeting from 3 to 5 p.m. will include an update from ABP, and a presentation on the Canada-Alberta Livestock Feed Assistance initiative, and zone breakout sessions. Guests can attend both meetings. Only delegates can attend the business portion of the annual meeting.
