Sep 9, 2021 | 10:55 AM

MELFORT, Sask. – This year’s drought means there will be fewer Canadian lentils to export this year.

Overall global lentil production is expected to decline 20 per cent this year.

Importing countries including India and Turkey are looking for lentils and Australia will be able to meet some of the red lentil demand in the future, but their production is lower as well.

Marlene Boersch with Mercantile Consulting Venture projected Canadian lentil exports at 1.95 million tonnes compared to 2.5 million last year.

Boersch made the comments during the virtual Canadian Pulse and Specials Crops Convention.

Three nominees have been acclaimed to the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers’ board of directors following the close of nominations.

Mario Gaudet of Melville will join the organization in January. Trent Richards of Assiniboia will serve a third term, and Shaun Dyrland of Kyle will continue into his second term.

SPG had called for nominations for three positions and received three nominations so all candidates will be acclaimed.

The new director terms will begin following the pulse growers virtual annual meeting on Jan. 10.
