Two arrested after homicide at Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation

The RCMP have arrested and charged two men in relation to a homicide at the Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation on Friday.

According to a media release, in the early hours on Sept. 3, the Rosthern RCMP received a report from Rosthern EMS of a deceased man inside a truck in a rural area near the Cree Nation.

The RCMP Major Crime Unit North is leading the investigation. The RCMP found the rural truck scene was in relation to a report RCMP received at 1:21 a.m. on Sept. 3 about an alleged altercation at Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation.

The RCMP found three individuals were reported to be involved but were not initially located. A second report was reported at the same residence at 3:55 a.m. RCMP made a connection between the two scenes and searched the residence at 7 a.m. by Rosthern RCMP.

On Sept. 3 the man found in the truck deceased was confirmed to be 26-year-old Brandon Cameron from Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation. His family was notified and his death is considered a homicide.

Police arrested Straughn Smallchild from Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 3 without incident. He was found at a residence on the Cree Nation. He is charged with one count of second degree murder and appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Tuesday.

On Sept. 4 Cory Littlepine was arrested at a residence at Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation. He has been charged with one count accessory after the fact to aggravated assault. He also appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court Tuesday morning.

Both men were remanded and are scheduled to make their next court appearances on Thursday.
