Election Debate

Liberal candidate disappointed in lack of participation in rural forum

Sep 7, 2021 | 3:27 PM

Ahead of the all-candidate forum taking place in Prince Albert this evening, Liberal candidate for Prince Albert, Estelle Hjertaas, has been openly critical of candidates not attending other forums.

This comes from the Nipawin and District Chamber of Commerce cancelling their own forum that was scheduled to take place Sept. 8 due to only two of the six candidates for the Prince Albert riding confirming their attendance.

While difficult timing could have been factors for some candidates, Hjertaas especially noted that incumbent Randy Hoback did not confirm his attendance.

“I think as the incumbent, he has a particular responsibility to be accountable to voters and show up. I’m disappointed because well, he did attend some debates, he didn’t come to three of them and I recall a similar pattern in 2015,” Hjertaas told paNOW.

paNOW/northeastNOW has reached out to Hoback for comment but he did not immediately respond.

Hjertaas, Hoback, and the other four candidates for Prince Albert constituency will be meeting tonight for the Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce all-candidate forum at the John M. Cuelenaere Public Library.

The forum is open to the public with doors opening at 6 p.m. and will also be live-streamed through the chamber’s Facebook page.
