A New Twist

Designs for water slide at new recreation centre to be discussed at council

Sep 7, 2021 | 2:51 PM

New schematic designs for the aquatic portion of the new recreation centre will be presented for review and approval at the city council meeting this evening. The city’s public works director will present key features to councillors.

The designs are regarding the location for the water slides. They have been prepared by the project architects who, in consultation with the Aquatic and Arenas Recreation Project Steering Committee proposed this idea.

The committee is in agreement with the consultants preferred option of this design where the water slide is located on the north side of the facility. It is being recommended for the following reasons:

  • The design reduces the size of the lower-level basement for mechanical and electrical equipment and all the equipment would be on the north end of the building.
  • It reduces the complexity of the water slide support structure as there would be no special requirements to maintain visual sight lines from the lobby, making it more efficient.
  • This design increases the size of the wave pool without increasing the building since there is no public access needed past the end of the pool. The pool can now be pushed closer the to the corner of the building. A bigger pool allows for a bigger wave to be generated.
  • These design changes result in a cost saving of $900,000.

“It is important to keep in mind that while the design of the aquatics facility is starting to take shape, there will still be changes as concepts are refined,” Mayor Greg Dionne said in a media release. “There is a lot of details to be finalized, but I’m excited to be at a stage where we can share early visual concepts.”

The drawing shows a basic layout of key features of the aquatics centre. If approved, the next stage in the process is to proceed with the detailed design where finer details will be decided.
