James Smith Cree Nation shooting suspect in custody

Shawn Moostoos has been taken into custody without incident.

RCMP said the 33-year-old from James Smith Cree Nation was arrested Monday afternoon around 4 p.m. at a residence in Melfort.

An emergency alert and subsequent search for Moostoos began Sunday evening after RCMP reported a shooting within the First Nation. A 37-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, both from James Smith Cree Nation, died as a result of the incident and a 44-year-old man was transported to hospital with what were described as serious but non life-threatening injuries.

The names of the deceased are not being released, but police confirmed Moostoos and the three victims were known to each other.

Police said they are not seeking additional suspects in regards to this incident. The investigation is ongoing and updates will be provided as soon as they become available.
