Dates have been set for the public inquest into the death of Samwel Uko, who died by suicide in Regina in May of 2020.

The inquest is to be held Sept. 20-24 at the Ramada Plaza in Regina.

Uko, 20, died by drowning in Wascana Lake on May 21, 2020. According to his family, the former University of Saskatchewan Huskies football player had gone to a Regina hospital seeking help for mental health issues but was sent away without getting assistance.

“The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is responsible for the investigation of all sudden, unexpected deaths,” the provincial government said in a media release announcing the dates.

“The purpose of an inquest is to establish who died, when and where that person died and the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.”

The inquest was called in June of 2020.

“What happened to Samwel should not happen to any person,” Justin Nyee, Uko’s uncle, said at the time. “Samwel’s family welcomes the news that this inquest will happen, and we want to see more done so that people reaching out for help are not turned away so tragically, the way Samwel was.”
