Resort Village of Candle Lake dismisses both administrator and maintenance manager

Sep 1, 2021 | 5:00 PM

A staffing shakeup at the Resort Village of Candle Lake has resulted in the dismissal of both the chief administrative officer and the maintenance manager.

According to a statement issued Tuesday by the Resort Village, the release of Heather Scott and Robert Johnson was effective as of Aug. 26.

“Council believed a change in leadership was necessary and would like to thank Ms. Scott and Mr. Johnson for their service,” the statement said.

The statement goes on to explain Cheryl Martens has been appointed chief administrative officer on an interim basis, and council will commence the process of recruiting a new chief administrative officer with the assistance of HMC Management Inc.

“In the interim, the Council of the Resort Village will do their best to serve their community and would like to thank the Resort Village staff and the public in advance for their patience and understanding during this time,” the statement said.

Former Mayor Borden Wasyluk told paNOW he was astonished when he heard the news about the staff changes.

“The retirement community, everything, was budgeted for, all planned, and Heather was of course a big part of that and extremely efficient,” he said.

Wasyluk went on to explain he was deeply concerned about the costs that will come as a result of the changes, such as the cost to pay the interim administrator, as well as consulting fees and the severance packages.

“We are looking at one heck of a pile of money going out of the Village of Candle Lake. The consultant isn’t going to tell you anything that every councillor shouldn’t know about what has to be done in the village,” he said.

paNOW was not able to get immediate comment from Mayor Terry Kostyna on Wednesday due to communication difficulties. Heather Scott did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Resort Village is located roughly 80 km northeast of Prince Albert.

Editor’s note: This story has been amended from the original to make clear Candle Lake mayor Terry Kostyna and paNOW were not able to connect due to communication difficulties. paNOW expects to have comment from Kostyna on Thursday.
