MELFORT, Sask. β€” Prairie wheat research groups are committing $3.5 million to wheat breeding research.

The Canadian Wheat Research Coalition (CWRC), along with the Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF) and the Saskatchewan Winter Cereals Development Commission (SWCDC), will provide the funds to the University of Manitoba (UM) for the continuation of the Fusarium head blight (FHB) nursery and winter wheat breeding program.

The FHB screening nursery evaluates breeding lines for their reaction to Fusarium graminearum which is the most common causal agent of FHB.

The UM program returns information to the network of western Canadian breeding efforts, and is the key to developing future wheat varieties with FHB resistance.

The CWRC is a collaboration between the Alberta Wheat Commission, Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission and the Manitoba Crop Alliance with a focus on funding genetic and agronomic wheat research for western Canadian farmers.

Flax growers in Western Canada will be looking for a new home for their flax straw.

Two processing facilities in Manitoba will cease operations at the end of the year.

According to the Georgia-based company, its operations were dedicated to making flax tow for cigarette paper production at its facility in New Jersey.

With the unplanned loss in demand, it’s possible growers will resort to burning flax straw.
