Shellbrook prepares for second by-election in five months

Aug 30, 2021 | 2:02 PM

A vacant council seat in the Town of Shellbrook will be filled later this month, and possibly by a man who stepped down from council last spring.

David Knight is among three people vying to replace John Hughes, who resigned earlier this month for health reasons. The nomination period wrapped up last week.

Similarly, Knight resigned his own council seat last spring and, when he spoke to paNOW, cited medical reasons for his decision. He also mentioned he wanted to focus on his health.

The council seat was in turn filled by Larry Batten. Knight was not available for comment on Monday to discuss his reasons for returning.

The two other candidates in this month’s election are Peter Halayka and Donovan Kultgen.

Election day has been scheduled for Sept. 29. Advance polls will take place on Sept 25 at the Scout Hall. Options for mail-in ballots are being finalized this week.
