Ida aims to hit New Orleans on Hurricane Katrina anniversary
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell wants everyone who lives or works outside the city’s levee protection system to evacuate well ahead of an expected hit by Hurricane Ida on Sunday.
“I am calling for a mandatory evacuation of all areas outside of our levee protection system,” the mayor announced as the city rushed to prepare for the rapidly intensifying storm, which forecasters expect to become a devastating Category 3 hurricane as it approaches the Louisiana coast.
She did not say how many people live there, but for anyone who has medical needs or wants to start early, “now is the time,” she said.
