Estelle Hjertaas looks for win as leading candidate for Liberal party

A Prince Albert legal aid lawyer, Estelle Hjertaas is the Liberal party candidate for the Prince Albert riding and will be running during the federal election for the second straight time.

This will be the first time since 2006 that the Liberal party will have a candidate running for the second consecutive federal election in the Prince Albert riding. Hjertaas would also become the first federally elected Liberal in the city since 1993.

“I’m a very big advocate for my clients but also for various issues that I see as being important for Prince Albert,” Hjertaas said to paNOW. “I feel like public service is absolutely a duty. That is why I chose to become a lawyer, and why I’m entering politics. For me, what is most important is to use my skill set and abilities to help other people.”

Her primary reason for running this time around is to help the community.

“I want to be a member of parliament because that is the best way to help people,” Hjertaas said. “I’m not just interested in helping people who are struggling. I want to be a voice for everyone in the area.

“Ultimately, the federal government is the one with the money. They can give money to Prince Albert for the new recreational center, or they can give money to Muskoday for affordable housing, or Nipawin for a new water treatment plant.”

There are several key points that she will include during her campaign including the economy, poverty, environment and climate control, and reconciliation.

“All those kinds of things kind of tie together,” Hjertaas said. “That is kind of what this election is really about, how do we want to come out of this pandemic?”

She added one of the key things the Liberal party has been able to get has been vaccines for COVID-19.

“Everyone who wants the vaccine can get it now, the prime minister promised by September, and it was done by the beginning of August,” Hjertaas added. “That’s very positive.

“We have proven that in a crisis that our government was a steady hand and was able to lead and made sure Canadians were able to avoid the worst outcome.”

One primary concern she has heard from the public has been about COVID-19 which she said the Liberal party will continue to provide programs and supports for families.

“We’re going to be there until people can get back to work or are able to have their businesses open 100 per cent,” Hjertaas said.

Her team learned quite a bit during the last election and plan to make a few changes during this campaign.

“I think we can do a better job of communicating to voters and have a better idea of what their key issues are,” Hjertaas added.

Canadian’s head to the polls for the federal election on Sept. 20.
