Field lacrosse provincials are finally back

After a two-year absence, the SLA Field Lacrosse Provincial Championships are officially back.

The festivities kicked off at Prime Ministers’ Park in Prince Albert, marking the first time the tournament could be played since Sturgis hosted it back in 2019.

The 2020 provincials were slated to have been played in Prince Albert, which Chase Netmaker was looking forward to. But due to the pandemic, Netmaker could not play in his last tournament as he now aged out of the program.

But tournament organizers made sure Netmaker was recognized as he performed the ceremonial faceoff before his old 18U Attack took on the Saskatoon Guardians, along with city councilor Dennis Ogrodnick.

Prince Albert is represented by three different teams this weekend, the 18U Attack, the 15U Attack, and the 13U Attack.

Here’s how all three faired on opening day Friday at Prime Ministers’ Park.

18U Attack

The 18U Attack had just one game on Friday, the primetime signature game under the lights on Max Clunie Field against the Saskatoon Guardians. The Attack narrowly fell 14-13 in a tight, back-and-forth game.

Braden Shewchuk had five goals for the Attack while Hayden Ulriksen scored three himself. Matthew Cudmore had two goals and an assist, while Bauer Swystun, Chase Ulriksen and Simon Acorn also scored for the Attack. Jeremy Wudrick had five goals and an assist to lead the Guardians.

15U Attack

The 15U Attack split both of their games to start their tournament. The Saskatoon Generals squeaked by with an 11-9 win over the Attack, before the Attack took their frustrations out on the Sturgis Trojans with a 20-9 victory.

Brayden Rieger led the way for the Attack in both their games, scoring 11 goals between them with five against the Generals and six and an assist against the Trojans.

13U Attack

The 13U Attack fell 14-7 against the Saskatoon Watchmen, before a 12-12 tie against the Weyburn Rattlers.

Cashian Sandry scored seven goals against the Rattlers. Bryden Netmaker had seven goals combined from the two games.

Round robin games continue on Saturday, with playdowns and medal games coming on Sunday.
