MELFORT, Sask. – Just before the start of the election campaign, the federal government approved $500 million for drought and wildfire relief programs under the AgriRecovery program.

Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario have announced their commitments under the business risk management program for a total of $322 million.

AgriRecovery is funded on a 60-40 cost-share basis once a province triggers the program.

The federal share of what the provinces have announced adds up to $482.5 million.

A national farm group has created a video outlining the priorities for the grain sector during this election campaign.

Canadian Grain Growers (CGG) chair Andre Harpe said the video highlights the support needed to unlock the country’s limitless potential for agriculture with a focus on key areas, such as business risk management, research funding, and breaking down barriers to trade.

He said farmers need is a willing partner from the next federal government whoever that may be.

The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) has launched its annual BeGrainSafe Week Aug. 16 to 23.

The program works to raise awareness on the dangers associated with grain.

Chief Executive Director Andrea Lear said CASA has developed resources, social media posts, public service announcements and safety advice articles with tips and information on how to be safe around grain.

“The BeGrainSafe program focuses on both training and prevention. With the first-ever BeGrainSafe Week, CASA is encouraging all farmers, farm workers, farm families and farming communities to take care around grain,” Lear said in a news release.

According to Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting data, there were 36 asphyxiation-related fatalities on farms in Canada between 2006-2015.

The BeGrainSafe campaign webpage includes resources for the general public.
