A summer intensive camp is being held this week at the EA Rawlinson Centre for the Arts by the Broadway North Youth Company.

Campers will receive new learning opportunities through instruction from professionals in the fields of music, dance, and drama. The camp runs all week long and has two age categories, 9 to 11 and 12 to 18.

“Every summer we host this one-week summer intensive,” Cara Stelmaschuk, events coordinator told paNOW. “A lot of them have come up all the way through the ranks and then we have a whole bunch of people who are brand new.”

At the end of the week there will be a recital where all the campers get to show off what they have learned, from vocals to drama to dance.

“A little bit of everything, every day, we cycle through it to keep it interesting,” Stelmaschuk said.

While the summer intensive is meant for the campers to have fun, it is still educational as well.

“They learn some improv skills for drama, some scene building, how to make a character believable, and a little skit for the final recital,” Stelmaschuk said. “They learn some basic things for dance. If they have never done it before, it’s super important.

“The same thing for voice. They learn some basic vocal stuff but are also learning the songs for the recital.”

One of the instructors, Elizabeth Chamberlain says much of the week is also about the relationships that are made.

“I really like making a connection with the students, I most look forward to making friends with everybody,” Chamberlain said. “We all work so well together.

“I think musical theatre and art is really important to the community. Having an opportunity for youth in the community to be able to do something that is artistic and creative and adds vibrancy and color to the cultural life style of Prince Albert is really amazing.”

Tazana Nilson has been attending the camp for the past 8 years and still learns something new every year.

“We go through and learn dances and songs,” Nilson said. “Drama changes every year, we have our own skits and stuff.

“I’ve made some great friends here. People come from all over Saskatchewan to join the program, so it’s really cool. It’s a really good community.”
