Resort Village of Elk Ridge moves forward with election, and names first mayor

Aug 10, 2021 | 9:53 AM

The first mayor of the Resort Village of Elk Ridge has won by acclamation.

Garry McKay was the only person to be nominated and will begin his two year term on Jan. 1, 2022.

“We’ve lived in the community for eight years and we worked very hard on the resort village application throughout that so this was sort of some validation that the community respects me and trusts my leadership,” he said.

In June, the Ministry of Government Relations officially approved the Hamlet’s application to be recognized as a Resort Village, however there were still a number of conditions attached including the need to have a council in place by Dec. 31.

“We’ve got some work to do now between now and Jan. 1, and I look forward to getting started with that work as soon as the election for the councillors is over,” McKay said.

A total of five people have put their names forward for the four councillor positions and they are Ryan Danberg, Trudy Engel, Len Hergott, Ross Hewett and Margaret Smith-Windsor.

The election has been scheduled for Sept. 4 at the Discovery Centre. Advance polls will be held at the same location, and will take place Aug. 21 (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.); Aug. 27 (4 p.m. to 8 p.m.); Aug. 28 (1 p.m. to 5 p.m.)
