NorSask Hockey Development Camp gets underway with hockey season around the corner

Aug 10, 2021 | 5:00 PM

For the 22nd straight year, Prince Albert will be hosting its annual NorSask Hockey Development Camp at the Art Hauser Centre as hockey season approaches.

The camp begins on Aug. 12 and runs until the 20th. A few spots are still available. Registration can be done online or in person on Thursday before the camp begins.

“We cover a wide variety of things including a checking camp, a defence camp, and goalie camp,” Mark Odnokon, teacher and organizer told paNOW. “We’ll improve their skills.”

The hockey camp is very busy as there are many children who attend including both girls and boys.

“We have had anywhere from 300 to 350 kids,” Odnokon said. “We’re thinking we’re going to have up to 300 this year.”

Last year, due to COVID-19 restrictions they were only allowed 30 participants on the ice, including the instructors. They carried on with the camp in 2020 but were limited to the number and types of sessions they could hold. They will get back to having many more people on the ice this year.

“We’re bringing back all of our specialty camps,” Odnokon said. “This year we will also put back in our classroom sessions and dryland training.”

NorSask Hockey Development is in partnership with the Prince Albert Raiders and the Global Sports Academy.

“We’ve had access to some of the Raiders player coaches and some of the skills development,” Odnokon said. “Also, with the Global Skills Academy we have brought in some of their curriculum. We really think we have the best access to skills teaching and positional teaching, with the Raiders, Global, and NorSask. I think it offers quite a bit for our athletes.”

Many of the coaches at the camp have past WHL experience and will also include a few Raiders players as well.

“We have some very qualified coaches who have been in the game for quite a few years, they bring a lot of experience,” Odnokon said. “A few Prince Albert Raider players want to come in and do a little bit of work as well.”

Raider forward Dallyn Peekeekoot will be one of the coaches. They are hoping forward Chase Friedt-Mohr from Prince Albert who plays for the Spokane Chiefs will join as well.
