After sweeping the weekend games, the Prince Albert Astros are 2021 Softball Saskatchewan U16 boy’s provincial champions.

After scoring three runs in the first inning, the Astros kept the momentum ending the game in the fourth inning hammering home eight runs including a grand slam home run to beat the Saskatoon Fury 11-1 at Rotary Field on Sunday.

Head coach Derek Mitchell said it feels great to be a provincial champion.

“Two years ago, in U14 provincials, we finished fourth so for this group to come that far feels really nice,” Mitchell told paNOW. “It’s been a lot of hard work by these boys, a lot of hard work by these parents bringing those boys and even though we’re the Prince Albert Astros there’s parents driving in from nine different communities around, so it’s been a whole district effort.”

The Astros went undefeated in round robin play defeating the Shellbrook Rangers, Saskatoon Longhorns and the Saskatoon Fury to clinch a bye to the championship final. Mitchell explained he was proud of how they played all weekend adding they took the emphasis out of winning and concentrated more on staying positive doing the little things throughout their games.

Not only did the Astros win provincials but they won it in front of their home crowd.

“I tried to tell the boys what the crowds would be like. I know ball in P.A., and I know it’s going to be huge here especially considering the COVID restrictions stuff. People were dying to come watch ball,” Mitchell said. “The stands were packed especially for all of our games; the night games were great. Attendance was great and it was awesome to see the fans in the crowd, it really was. I know it gets a little nerve-wracking for the boys at first, but it was really good.”

Mitchell wanted to thank the community of Prince Albert for coming out to their games and showing the boys their support.
