Crews continuing to work on 119 active fires in Saskatchewan

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) is reporting as of 10 a.m. this morning there are 119 active fires in the province.

According to the SPSA, 17 are still uncontained, however eight are contained and 76 are under ongoing assessment. The SPSA is also protecting property in the rest of the 18 fires.

The wildfires of note are the Mine, Harding and Bell fires.

The Mine blaze is 20 kilometers north of Grandmother’s Bay and is 4,021 hectares. Crews held Grandmother’s Bay access road with a backburn and are working on hotspots that crossed the road. They said this fire is a priority in the northern response area on Saturday.

The Harding Fire north of Smeaton is 23,319 hectares and crews are using multiple resources to fight the blaze including air tanker and helicopter support. Highway 106 and Narrow Hills Provincial Park continue to be values in the area. Their crews are patrolling the north end of the fire and will be working from the northeast side of the blaze moving east working on hot spots. They will also be extinguishing hot spots on the west side along the highway. The head of the fire has been stopped near Muskeg.

The Bell Fire north of Hudson Bay is 22,630 hectares and crews with Helicopters and dozers are continuing containment and protecting values on the west side of the blaze. On the east side, they’re continuing with perimeter containment with help from helicopter bucketing. it is anticipated they will do some back burning on Saturday.
