MELFORT, Sask.— Saskatchewan’s general farm group is calling on agribusinesses to offer financial flexibility to producers during this year’s drought.

Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan president Todd Lewis said some farmers are expressing concern about forward supply contracts with grain companies.

“Now we are at a point where some of these contracts are going to need to be bought out,” Lewis said. “What are the penalties going to be and what are the deductions going to be? A lot of the contracts will have significant deductions for low bushel weight and things like that.”.

Lewis encourages farmers and suppliers to keep the lines of communication open during stressful times.

He added that some farmers may want to consult a lawyer.

British Columbia has placed a moratorium on new mink farms and capped existing farms at their current numbers.

The new provincial health order comes after two mink tested positive for the virus on a farm that’s been under quarantine and samples from five more of the animals from the same farm tested positive at B.C.’s animal health lab with final results pending from a national lab in Winnipeg.

The Agriculture Ministry says each farm is required to report the total number of mink to the provincial health officer and the medical health officer in their regional health authority.

The province is reviewing its policies related to fur farms while ensuring biosecurity measures are in place to protect both the public and animal health.
