MELFORT, Sask. — Regina-based Farm Credit Canada (FCC) is offering to provide support to drought-stricken producers.

Senior vice-president of operations, Darren Howden said FCC is willing to be flexible on loans on a case by case basis.

“If it is a short term issue, what we are looking at is to defer the customers loan payments or we will also provide short term financing if that makes sense,” Howden said.

If it is a bigger issue that needs more work, they may look at restructuring to put producers back into a solid financial footing.

Howden said they expect the requests to start coming between mid- to late August.

Hot, dry conditions have been ideal for grasshoppers and some of the insects have been finding their way into peas and lentils.

Sarah Anderson is Saskatchewan Pulse Growers new agronomy manager. She said there has been some late season insect pressure.

“This is definitely the time for grasshoppers to shine, late season grasshoopers are thriving in many areas of the province right now,” Anderson said.

Grasshoppers are a bigger issues for lentils than peas according to Anderson.

“As crops are flowering up to pod development, it is probably the most crucial timing,” Anderson said. “A hungry grasshopper will continue to feed on green crop all the way through.”

The hot, dry weather has impacted pulse crops but not quite as much as canola and the cereals.
