Speed Sign Data

Speed monitoring data used for future traffic enforcement

Jul 26, 2021 | 1:56 PM

Last year, the City of Prince Albert purchased and installed speed monitoring signs for school zones, main arteries, and a sign for each ward.

These signs collect data on the speed people are going and at what time. This information is collected by the city and is used for future monitoring of the area.

“The city collects both speed, and volume data on the streets of Prince Albert annually,” Wes Hicks, director of public works told paNOW. “That data is tabulated into a map, these maps are available on the City of Prince Albert website.

“The data is collected in three different methods. Intersections with cameras collect around the clock [data]. We also have the speed monitoring signs that are put up in school zones and moved around the city and then we also have our tube counters that we put around the city. All that data is tabulated and put into the maps that are available.”

The data collected and complaints from city residents do impact where the signs are next put up.

“Yes, based on the documentation we have, we place those signs in those areas to remind people about their speed,” Hicks said.

“The overall data that is collected throughout the city is shared through the departments including the police department and then they make a decision about where they want to put up their traffic enforcement.”

While the signs do have an impact in reminding people to check their speed, it is too early for the city to have noticed trends that the data has provided.

“There are a few streets in the city that do have issues, but that is where traffic enforcement comes in,” Hicks said.
