Charlie’s Angels gather at Mark’s Nine to raise more dough for SPCA

Those who knew Charlene ‘Charlie’ Welch knew she loved two things dearly, caring for her dogs and making cool clothing items for those close to her.

The fundraising golf tournament that runs at Mark’s Nine Golf and Country Club each year in her honour pays homage to both of those elements.

Heading into its eighth annual event, the Charlie’s Angels Golf Tournament has raised over $110,000 toward the Prince Albert SPCA to ensure dogs and cats that Charlie would have loved can be taken care of.

“Her fur babies, she probably treated them better than her two-legged babies,” said Holly Abrey-Hare, a tournament organizer and Charlie’s friend. “If you knew her, you knew her fur babies were her children. She actually passed away from cancer, but we wanted to support the SPCA— especially now. What can they do for fundraisers? They’ve come to rely on us and we’re happy to oblige.”

Just about all of the tournament’s 44 golfers and their caddies dressed up as well in bright and flashy costumes. There was a team full of Wonder Women, a Flintstone-themed team, a cowgirl club and a Hawaiian team just to name a few.

Abrey-Hare was one of Charlie’s good friends and helps organize the event. Her team was the Christmas in July team. Holly dressed up like a Christmas present, to mimic the design of a top Charlie made for her one holiday.

“If you knew Charlie, she was Pinterest before there was Pinterest. I was inspired by a shirt that she made for me years ago,” Abrey-Hare said. “It’s taken a life of its own. You don’t have to dress up, but most people that golf in this tournament annually all dress up. We have team names, team costumes and team spirit.”

Abrey-Hare will hope to gather the total of this year’s event will exceed last year’s of $10,000. The results are expected to be calculated by early next week.
