The Perdue Cattle Show today and tomorrow will be the largest in many years thanks to it becoming a qualifying event for Canadian Western Agribition.

The top purebred bull and female will get an automatic berth into the Beef Supreme Champion at Agribition’s 50th anniversary show in November.

Perdue Ag Society board member Shelley Andrews said it will be an exciting weekend.

“We have 78 exhibitors and about 86 purebreds coming and 49 commercial,” Andrews said.

The cattle show starts today with the junior events and will be followed by the commercial cattle show.

The purebred show is Saturday with the Supreme Champion qualifying bull and female selected at around four in the afternoon.

Crops in Saskatchewan are maturing rapidly and showing ongoing signs of heat stress this week.

Provincial crops extension specialist Matt Struthers said it is too late for rain to improve yields, but any precipitation is welcome to maintain yields through the hot weather.

Some producers are cutting their poor crops for livestock feed according to Struthers.

He added that grasshoppers are becoming a problem.

“They are out of control and popping up everywhere, even in places that don’t normally get dry enough for grasshoppers,” Struthers said.

Other causes of crop loss have included hail, winds and heat this past week.

Livestock producers in the Interlake region of Manitoba are calling for government help to deal with this year’s extreme drought.

Nearly 100 producers gathered for a rally west of Teulon to bring attention to the issue.

Orval Procter, a municipal councillor and beef producer, said farmers want financial assistance and more Crown land opened for haying and grazing.
