Tim Horton’s coffee sales sending kids to camp

Camp Day at Tim Horton’s is underway today.

Coffee and iced coffee sales across Canada throughout the day will go directly toward sending kids to camp.

The owner of the Melfort location Shannon Sigfusson said campers would normally go to camps that are situated across the country.

“There isn’t one in Saskatchewan but there are camps in the east and in Ontario, there is one that is relatively new that most of our campers go to in Manitoba,” Sigfusson said. “There is one in B.C. and a couple in the United States as well.”

The campers that are selected in each community, enter a multi-year program and Tim Horton’s support them throughout their youth between the ages of 12 to 16.

Each community that has a Tim Horton’s can see a couple of youth utilize the camps.

“The foundation camp will work with the schools or social workers or different groups within the community to select campers,” Sigfusson said. “Campers that are selected are invited back for consecutive years and it keeps building on skills that they have been learning.”

Last year’s camp was all done on a virtual basis as will this year’s camp.

“It helps to develop their leadership skills and just really help to promote their personal growth and also their community growth,” Sigfusson said. “This program has just really helped a lot of these children grow in a way that they perhaps didn’t know was available to them.”

The camps can also help children with moving onto university or secondary education.

“It is truly more than just camp, it is leadership building, social responsibility building and has made a huge difference in the lives of the children that have attended,” Sigfusson said.

Camp Day bracelets are also being sold for $2 which is a direct donation to the foundation.

Activities and a barbecue normally accompany Camp Day at Tim Horton’s but most are keeping it low key for this year yet.

The Melfort location which has been open for 10 years now and typically brings in anywhere between $7,000 and $8,000 on Camp Day.
