MELFORT, Sask. — Farm Credit Canada (FCC) is offering its support to farmers and ranchers who are facing production challenges due to adverse growing conditions.

President and CEO Michael Hoffort said FCC will work with customers to come up with solutions for their operations and will consider additional short term credit options, deferral of principal payments or other loan payment schedule amendments to reduce financial pressures.

Customers in Western Canada are encouraged to make contact sooner rather than later to allow for the most flexibility.

Canadian Forage and Grassland Association (CFGA) will be receiving $2.6 million in federal funding for alfalfa research and grassland carbon offsets.

It will support three projects that will assess and improve alfalfa growth using artificial intelligence and develop a carbon offset system for grasslands.

According to this week’s Manitoba crop report, drought concerns persist with downgraded yield outlook for spring cereals, canola, and corn.

Manitoba Agriculture Oilseeds specialist Dane Froese said there’s finally been a break from the intense heat.

“The smoke rolling into the region is unfortunate because of forest fires in other areas, but it has benefitted the prairies with cooling things down and reduce some of that intense solar radiation,” Froese said. “The crops have had a small chance to recover now.”

Some farmers are turning their oats, barley and wheat into a green feed source to supplement cattle.
