A plan for an indoor go-kart track has been unanimously approved to move forward by Prince Albert city council.

The proposed building expansion will be at the Minto Rec Centre and Lounge on 13th Street East and will be 400 square meters.

The addition would occupy the southeast corner of the building.

During Monday’s city council meeting, Coun. Tony Head welcomed the idea.

“Our city can use this addition to bring kids to the community, and of course will be something for the ones that currently live here,” Head said. “I’m quite excited to see this addition and I can’t wait to see it come to fruition.”

The idea to have this recreation activity indoors is also very appealing to Mayor Greg Dionne.

“It’s another entertainment activity for the kids indoors,” Dionne told paNOW. “It’s another amenity that we’ll have in our city that other cities have, that we don’t. That is why it’s exciting.

“It will be another thing you can do in our community when you are looking for something to do on a rainy day.”

One of the economic development goals stated in the City of Prince Albert’s official community plan is to ‘create viable, diverse commercial areas in the city that provide opportunities for working, shopping, and entertainment activities.’

The proposed development supports this goal as it would increase the variety of entertainment options available in the city.

The application was also reviewed by the Department of Public Works, Community Services, Fire and Emergency Services, Financial Services, and the Building Division and there are no concerns.

The Minto Rec Centre currently has bowling, an arcade, and indoor bumper karts.

Management at the Minto Rec Centre did not want to add further comment about the expansion at this time.
