P.A. couple recount weekend fire escape

A Prince Albert couple is reflecting on the fire that forced everyone out of a building last weekend. While they’re downplaying their role, it’s likely their quick actions helped prevent things being far worse.

Earlier this week paNOW reported on a fire that started on July 3 at the 400 block of Ninth Street East at a multi-suite unit.

The Prince Albert Fire Department responded to the incident at 3 a.m. where they rescued a 69-year-old woman using a ladder. She had injuries but has since been discharged from hospital.

However, the incident may have had a different outcome if it weren’t for a pair of tenants living there.

Grey Isbister and Cheyanne Laban who lived together in one of the suites explained to paNOW they were watching a movie when Laban asked if he smelled smoke. He explained it smelled like burning plastic, which he originally thought may be his garbage can outside his window.

They then checked the hallway outside of their suite for smoke and they said it was hard to see anything because the lights were off.

“We didn’t see or smell anything until he opened up the door,” Laban said. “He checked the hallway and when he came back in, he told me to call the fire department right away.”

As Laban called the fire department Isbister began knocking on doors and yelling down the hallway to alert the other residents because, the couple claim, the alarm did not go off. Isbister explained he went out into the hallway right away forgetting to put on a shirt.

“Everybody in the building was sleeping so they just said they heard me yelling so they came out to see what was happening,” he said.

They said it was surprising the alarm did not go off because it is usually very sensitive noting it’s gone off in the past when people were cooking.

They explained everyone got out safely and two of the suites were vacant at the time. While their unit wasn’t directly impacted by the fire they’ve had to move out.

paNOW reached out to the landlord who chose not to offer comment at this time.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
