Kinsmen Water Park closed after swimmer rescued from pipe

Jul 9, 2021 | 11:00 AM

Lifeguards at the Kinsmen Water Park responded to a dangerous situation Thursday afternoon as a swimmer got their finger trapped in a main pool outlet jet. The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. The facility was closed today and will also remain shut Saturday following an investigation and repairs.

The person who got caught in the pipe was treated in hospital and the city is reminding the public about the importance of adult supervision.

The Prince Albert Fire Department was called to the water park and worked with lifeguards and maintenance personnel to free the swimmer and removed the pipe that caused the incident.

Paramedics from Parkland Ambulance were also called to the scene. The swimmer was alert when they arrived and was transported to Victoria Hospital with an adult chaperone, where they were treated.

While the media release suggests the swimmer was a child, it did not say how old they were. The city added Kinsmen Water Park lifeguards strive to provide a safe opportunity for public swimming, lane swimming, and swimming lessons.

The city added a reminder to the public about the Kinsmen Water Park’s safety policy which states that all children under the age of eight must be accompanied by an adult in the water and within arms reach at all times, while children aged eight to 10 must be accompanied by an adult inside the water park.

The Kinsmen Water Park was closed after the incident on Thursday and was closed Friday as an investigation and a debrief was completed with the staff. The City of P.A. posted on their Twitter account late Friday afternoon, that due to maintenance and repairs to the main pool, the facility would also remain closed on Saturday, July 10th. There will be no lane swimming or public swimming.

City of Prince Albert maintenance staff will be working to re-open the pool as soon as possible once repairs are made.

Editor’s note: this story was amended Friday afternoon to update that the facility will also be closed Saturday.
