MELFORT, Sask. — The Saskatchewan government is putting financial support behind Red Leaf Pulp (RLP) to develop wheat straw pulping technologies.

The $395,000 from the Saskatchewan Advantage Innovation Fund (SAIF) is in addition to the $495,000 from the federal clean technology fund.

RLP is leading a project to produce pulp from wheat straw, which can be used to manufacture paper and packaging products. The company will also work with researchers at the University of Saskatchewan to develop additional high-value applications.

Once the pulping technology is successfully commercialized, RLP will establish Canada’s first wheat straw pulp facility in Regina worth an estimated $350 million creating 110 permanent full-time jobs.

Ingersoll Rand Inc. has entered into an agreement to acquire Maximus, a provider of digital controls and production management systems in the agri-tech market.

Maximus is a Montreal based company specializing in internet-linked systems for hog and poultry barns that control and automate ventilation, feed systems, lighting, record-keeping, and other operations with on-site and remote access.

Most of the existing systems have been set up in Quebec and Manitoba.

Ingersoll wants to use the systems in other settings including greenhouses.

The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2021 and has an estimated worth of $135.4 million.

Clean Seed will launch its latest technology at two large agricultural trade shows in the United States.

The Farm Progress Show at Decatur, Ill. from Aug. 31 to Sept 2 and Big Iron Farm Show at Fargo, N.D., Sept.13 to 16 will feature the SMART Seeder MAX seeding tools.

The equipment features electronic metering and software control, enabling row-by-row variable rate technology.

Clean Seed will also be meeting with U.S. producers and dealers with winter canola and winter wheat seeding demonstrations under the “Meet MAX™ Field Viewing Program” scheduled for Montana, North Dakota, and Nevada.

Clean Seed announced this spring it would be expanding its operations through the lease of a newly built 16,000 square foot facility located in Saskatoon, Sask., which will be the heart of the company’s Canadian prairie operations.
