Prince Albert schools to benefit from Early Learning Intensive Support investment

Jul 8, 2021 | 11:00 AM

Children within the two Prince Albert school divisions who require intensive early learning support will have more resources available to them this upcoming school year.

The Government of Saskatchewan is providing more than $3 million to the Early Learning Intensive Support (ELIS) Program for the 2021-22 school year through the Canada-Saskatchewan Early Learning and Child Care Agreement. The Prince Albert Catholic School Division (PACSD) will receive $150,000 in funding while the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division will receive $300,000.

“For the 2020-21 school year, we have been funded for 12 spaces in prekindergarten to support three- and four-year-old children who require intensive supports to meet their individualized needs,” said Lorel Trumier, PACSD Director.

The ELIS program supports the Saskatchewan Disability Strategy by expanding early learning programming to assist young children experiencing disability. A news release from the government said, “it focuses on the strengths, needs and interests of individual students and supports their requirements, while eliminating learning barriers to receive a good start on their learning and development.”

Since 2018, more than 500 prekindergarten-aged children have benefited from the program in several communities, including Prince Albert and North Battleford.

“This investment in early learning programming will have a very positive impact on the students in the program. It also means our ELIS program can continue, and we will be able to support students with intensive needs at a very early age in schools,” Trumier said.

Twenty-three Saskatchewan school divisions are offering the program in 2021-22. Interested families are encouraged to submit an application to their local school division for consideration.
