Saskatchewan livestock and forage day goes ahead after a year off

Jul 6, 2021 | 12:10 PM

MELFORT, Sask. — The Livestock Forage Centre of Excellence (LFCE) south of Clavet, Sask. will hold its second summer field day. Last year’s event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

LFCE director Dr. Scott Wright said it is time to get back to business.

“We are a new organization that’s been quiet for too long,” Wright said in a news release. “LFCE is about a community of industry and a community of science. The field day is our opportunity to re-start our outreach and re-engage with people and, frankly, to get a flow of information from them on what they see is important and where they see the opportunities lie.”

The field day begins with a panel discussion with Wright, University of Regina Clinical Psychology graduate student Cynthia Beck, and Anne Wasko, Gateway Livestock market analyst, addressing getting back to business with a focus on mental health, an eye to the future of the markets and an outlook on livestock and forage science.

Following lunch there will be tours of the pens, plots, and paddocks.

Wright said the day will be a combination of seasoned and new researchers who are coming to the table with new perspectives and new ideas.

Details regarding pandemic protocols are still being determined, according to Wright.

“Even though the provincial government is talking about being wide open, we are taking extra precautions so that we have a level of risk mitigation that is higher than in the general public,” he said.

The field day on July 20 is a free event and lunch will be provided, but registration is required.
